Engagement on social media seems to have this scary connotation to it. Like no one really knows how to engage, but everyone knows it’s important.

So how does one go about engaging on social media?

Well, it’s pretty simple actually.

Engagement is the act of creating a connection with a potential customer. The more contact you have with that person, the more likely they’re going to buy from you in the future. The rule of 7’s says that someone needs to see your content at least 7 times before they will buy from you.

That being said, what are some simple ways you can engage without taking up too much of your time?

You can go through your feed and comment/like the latest posts.

You can search specific hashtags and engage on the content there.

You can DM your latest post to people you think would benefit from seeing it.

You can go through the list of people who follow you and engage with them.

There are many different ways you can engage on your social media platforms. At the end of the day, your followers will feel positivity from your brand and trust comes with that. They will want to purchase from your business, just because you commented on their post!

The follow up question here is always this: When do I engage on Instagram and for how long?

I like to tell people this simple rule of thumb: engage for 30 minutes before and after you post. That way, Instagram will see that you are active and reward you by sharing your content with more people.

I know, an hour of engagement seems like a long time. But once you go through those simple ways to engage, the time will fly by and your insights will show great growth! Instagram wants their businesses to be active on social media, because they want to get a return on the platform they’ve given you to promote your product. They are going to promote your post more if they see you’re active!

Try to engage every day, even if it is just for a few minutes at a time. A little time each day is much better than no time at all! You want to stay up to date on what your followers are doing and what trends are happening now. Plus, everyone appreciates active brands rather than stagnant brands who post once a week.

So Claire”, you ask, “how do I know that my engagement strategy is working?”

Well, if your profile is set up as a business profile, you are able to look at the insights. Take a look to see what those percentages are looking like! If they’re all in the green every week, then you should be good to go.

As you can see here, both my Accounts Reached and Content Interactions have proven to be in the green percentage for this week, and that means my strategy is working!

I’ll be honest though…on those weeks when I’m behind on work and haven’t planned out my content, these numbers are not in the green. But that’s okay. It’s okay to be overwhelmed and set something to the back-burner for a couple of days. But ALWAYS remember to pick it up strong! Engagement is a long-term game, so is social media. You can’t go strong one day and expect great results the next.
