This may seem like the most obvious step, but several companies try to sell their product to everyone. Some of you might be thinking, “What is wrong with that?” Well, let me tell you something that might be hard to hear, not everybody is your target market! Create an avatar for your target market. Identifying your audience will help you determine how to properly create content that will speak their language.

When you understand your niche, dominate it!

Some things to keep in mind when defining a target market:

  • Who is your ideal customer?
  • What are their values? Where do they spend most of their money?
  • What are they interested in?
  • Male/female? Age?

Put Yourself into your Ideal Customer’s Shoes

Start by creating a list of questions potential customers may have, these can be gathered from reviews or comments from posts. This will help put yourself into your customer’s shoes. Once you have a list of questions, group the questions together and rank them from the broadest to the most specific topic. Ranking topics from the highest to the lowest is called the buyer funnel. The buyer funnel starts at the top where your customer is starting to find interest in a product. The end of the funnel is where a customer knows everything about a product and is ready to make a purchase.

Create content that appeals to each of those parts of the funnel to help your customer make their decision.

Focus Content on your Customer’s Needs

Before you start creating content, think to yourself, “How does this content meet the interests of my followers?”

When you put the focus onto the customer’s psychograph this creates trust with your customers by addressing topics of interest, particular challenges, or pain points. This shows your customers you care about their needs and understand how a product can solve a problem. Building trust is key to converting your followers into paying customers.

Take Advantage of Surveys

The easiest way to find out what your followers want is by sending a survey! Keep in mind that a survey is only what you make of it. This is the perfect way to develop a deeper understanding of the people behind the screen. Have an idea of what you want to get out of the survey before you send it to get the most out of it.

One of the easiest ways to conduct a survey on Instagram is by sharing a poll over Instagram Stories. At times it can be difficult to get people to take a survey, so try offering a giveaway as an incentive for participating!

Now… Try it Out for Yourself

Identifying your audience will help you determine the best way to implement marketing tactics to impact your customers. It’s up to you to take this to your company to show your potential customers the value your business can add to their life!
